Already this year, Apple has failed to block off a number of critical bugs in its operating systems.

What the researchers have highlighted, yet again, is that exploiting Apple software is much easier than supposed. That means it’s a serious problem for iOS, one that has been discussed before, and “all third-party apps running on iPhone and iPad are completely unprotected from this threat”, according to the paper. In Mac OS X, the scheme that gets preference is the first one to register, whereas it’s the most recent one in iOS. But, similar to the WebSocket problem, an attacker can use a bad app to register the same URL scheme as a good app and therefore grab data intended for the latter. Typically, when this URL is invoked by an application data is shared so the task can begin.

This resided in “Schemes”, which provide a way for apps to share tasks using a URL registered by an app with the OS. One issue was found to affect iPhones and other iDevices as well as Macs.

The study saw the 1Password password management app attacked in this way to access credentials. Thanks to a lack of authentication, it was possible for a malicious app to hijack a port supposed to be used by a legitimate app to access that web content. Apple appears to have locked down the iCloud attack, according to the academics’ paper, in 10.10.4, though that wouldn’t stop an attacker who could delete the keychain item.Īnother Mac OS X flaw involved WebSocket, used to display web content in apps. They managed to extract authenticating tokens for iCloud and Facebook accounts in the process, allowing them to potentially hijack accounts. The researchers tested their Keychain attack on Apple’s Internet Accounts and Google Chrome on OS X 10.10. The problem is not resident in iOS, however. That meant the attackers could access all the authenticating data for that app left in their own item.įurthermore, an existing keychain item can simply be deleted by an unauthorized app, making the attack that much simpler. When a user created a password for the target app, the software would check the Keychain for those attributes to determine where to dump the authentication information, deciding it could leave them in the malicious app’s item on the keychain. But the researchers found it was possible to poison the Keychain with malicious software, which would create an item on the chain that partly mimicked another legitimate application's “attributes”. Each app has its own little portion of the Keychain, known as an “item”, that only it should be able to access.
